The Most Important Drawbar Settings For Recording Keyboard Tracks!!
This is a small clip of my full breakdown of how to create a Hammond "pad track". It is one of the most common tracks that I ever get asked to create in the studio and this is a roadmap for you of how to do it. A pad track is a simple supportive Hammond track that acts like glue and pulls everything together :). It's all about the drawbar moves and adding energy to the right spots. This chapter will have play along tracks for you to practice to, which are awesome!! The song is the classic "Shaky Town" by Jackson Browne off the amazing "Running On Empty" album. It's about a 45 Minute tutorial but here is a short 8 minute clip for you to check out. I am also about to add 5 new Chapters to T...

Jon Lord Style Blues Lick
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.День назад
Here is a very accessible "spin" that Jon Lord uses in some of his blues solos. Sometimes these "simple" licks are the best because they can instantly integrate into your playing! Don't forget about the slow down tool in RUclips (the gear shaped icon in the bottom right). It is great for focussing on the details :)

Mike Little November 2023 Lick Of The Month
As a beginning church organist I am so grateful for this video 🔥
So happy to hear 🎹🎹❤️❤️
Nice
🎹🎹🤟🤟
This is gold!
🙏🙏🎹🎹
Awesome Mike looking forward to even more Hammond awesomeness on Universe of Keys. And really nice video definitly gonna try out those drawbar settings even though I usually go with a few clicks of the 8:th drawbar together with the bottom 4.
Glad you are finding your own drawbar settings. Thats how you make it your own 👊👊🤟🤟
Awesome, as usual! Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🙏🎹🎹❤️❤️
I'm guilty of not experimenting enough with drawbars. This episode is worth a lot to me! Many thanks Mike!
So glad to hear 🎹🎹👊👊🔥🔥
Great stuff, can’t wait! Can‘t go wrong doubling down on basics. On that note: digested the stuff you showed me, pulled it during rehearsal and everyone was „man you‘re cooking!“😅
Amazing!! That’s so great!!
That’s so cool ! I am looking forward to work on these new content 🤩 ! … though I still have much "work " to do with the existing one 😶
There will be lots there to have fun with 🎹🎹👊👊
Good news Mike! Makes me want to find out what the harmonic intervals of the drawbars are. Seems like octaves ,fourths and fifths for some of the white ones. Back to the fundamentals.
I am sure that’s just a google search away :). I think you are right though. I go with what sounds good in the music. Sometimes the dissonant ones work great too in certain situations. Have a great day!!
I'm a classical pianist and just meander around this kind of music. This is a simply amazing top quality, calm, no gimmicks tutorial. Ray really understood structure, rhythm and melody and so does this tutor.
Thanks so much. Really glad you enjoyed it 🙏🎹
Excellent stuff!!
❤️❤️🎹🎹
👍 Playing a Hammond organ is not as easy as some may think ! One of my fears of trying a Hammond at a store is that even if it's a real Hammond, I may not be able to make it sound like one !
Just worry about sounding like you 🎹🎹🤟🤟
Mike, please RUclips Lenny Dee Folsom Prison Blues Nashville Now broadcast. The camera shows him playing a fast scale. How about a lesson on it? Lenny also ‘ plays ‘ the presets which I’m learning on my own. Keep up the great videos!
Hey :). Thanks for introducing me to this. I have never heard him before. Love the preset playing. So good. Will be doing a lot more research on this guy. Really appreciate this. Mike
❤❤❤❤❤JOHNATAN DOUGLAS LORD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rip, genious !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️🎹🎹🎹🎹🙏🙏🙏🙏
Now, that's something to chew on. Thanks.
Thank you!! 🙏 🙏🎹🎹
I was getting tense. I thought one of those keys is going to fly off at any moment and take someone's eye out.
😂😂🎹🎹
even better on a stock 55 b3 or 58 with percussion drop mod 😎👍
🎹🎹🙏🙏
I defenitly liked it ! 👍🏼😎
Thank you 🙏
You nailed it!!..saw john lord play Lazy back in the day and you brought it back to my train of sight and thought too..he played it in F just the way you are showing us..he was a phenominal and fast player..got to see his use of the F blues scale up close!..also was classically trained pianist too!..you picked a great one go tutor us on and thanks bro from anothed Michael
Thanks Michael! So glad you liked the video. Love Jon Lord. He played my B3. It was a crazy experience. Total gentleman. And what a player. Have a great weekend. Mike
Nice tip, but these days you have a sampled piano sound on just about every fake hammond, or you can even add a midi to a real one. Plus, there's really no need to have a "piano" in your hammond to be able to play boogie woogie, as boogie woogie has been commonly played on hammonds since the 1940s! Try typing "Barbara Dennerlein boogie" or "Milt Buckner boogie" on youtube to hear how amazing it sounds when jazz's greatest masters are at work.
Another great video filled with some juicy licks! Cheers for sharing Mike!
Cheers!!
Great lesson!, thanks Mike.
Thanks James 🙏🎹🤟🤟
Thanks so much for this, my friend!
Thank you Louis 🙏🙏
Hey Mike, I love how you break these tasty licks down and show how we can make them our own, Frankenstein them with other licks, and start making them part of our DNA!
Glad you like Seth! I know you are already probably using this in your solos! It’s easy but effective!!
At 3:20 WOW !!! What a great licks 👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼
Thank you 🤟🤟🤟🤟🎹🎹🎹🎹!!
Hey Mike, I'm vacationing at the Boston's South shore this week. I stopped in a local music shop (awesome shop btw), the manager got real excited when I told him I was a keyboard player. He took me around the corner to a 78 rhodes in mint condition. I played some of the blues stuff I picked up from your channel and a lot of my own. The rhodes had so much more soul than any of the digitals of today do. Mike your channel is awesome, I can work these bits of knowledge into my playing when the time allows. One day when I have enough time to commit I'll sign up for one of your Master classes.
Aww thanks Justus. I really do appreciate the positive feedback. I love to share music. It’s such a passion. I am glad the content is helping! Would love to meet you in person in a master class. That will be fun :). Enjoy your vacation ☀️
Very tasty information!
Glad ya like :)
Well I know that certain drawbars add 5th or maj 3rds from the note you’re playing. Does this clash when you’re playing minor chords? For example.. you add the drawbar that adds a maj 3rd and you’re hitting a G minor chord but it’s adding that B.
I have never noticed clashing to be honest. Doesn’t seem to be an issue :)

Thanks will continue Frankensteining😂

@@UniverseofKeys yeah 👍
I just lurve me a John Lord lick. Thank you!
Me too!! Thanks for watching :)
When you say the lifetime membership can be paid in 3 installments, how frequent are those payments? Monthly, annually, every 30 minutes?
Hi Chris :). Hahaha. This made me laugh. Yes that really should be clarified. It is monthly for 3 months. Email me at universeofkeys@gmail.com and I will hook you up w a discount code. Chat soon! Mike
So funny, I stumbled on this sound just a day before your post. I have built in reverb on my B3. I went to just drawbar 4 with percussion on and I was like wow that’s kinda like an electric piano and started playing your “expensive” sus2 piano lick from a few posts prior.
Hahaha. Amazing!! Such an expressive instrument ❤️. Have a great day 🙏🙏🤟🤟
Riders on the Storm!!! Sounds beautiful on that organ
Thanks so much 🙏🙏
I was trying this setting yesterday on B3-X (software emulation) but without the drawbars.. pretty nice sound.. i added a tube screamer for more volume & some girth, and then a spring reverb.. can't wait to try with the drawbar too..
Very cool! That software is incredible. Amazing how good it sounds!!
😁💪👍
🙏🙏🎹🎹
Mike's teaching unlocked this icon of art rock for me and provided useful insights into composition and theory. Now if I just had that rhythm of Ray Manzarek.
Thanks Hugo! PS. You have great rhythm. As one great musician once said “let’s not BS each other with false humility”. Hahaha.
@@UniverseofKeys I like your use of subtlety and major 7ths. Learning the section as played, before going all "Friday Night Drums" with it., (local joke.)
Very cool!
😎😎🎹🎹
Man- if you think that sounds like a piano - - - You need to get an EAR TUNE-UP ......
Hammond made many drawbar settings. They all had different names. Tuba, Flute, Piano, Trombone. Yes they all sound like variations of an organ. No it is not literal ;) but I will get my ears checked 😂
Any reasonable musician understands that this is an approximation, similar to pipe organ settings.
@@tuesdaysteve& @Universeof Keys I have a Hammond Spinet EX-800E that has a "Piano" setting and it Sounds Just Like A Piano. 🎹
Diana Ross ~~ My Old Piano ☺ It"s a Hammond 😄ruclips.net/video/T6ahzLGK_VY/видео.html
Thanks very much Mike ! This is what I was lookin’ for, for some songs where they use this. I tried different settings for some songs. Now I only hope that my L-100 comes close, Because it has a different percussion as a B3. 😊 Thanks anyway 👍🏼
Thank you for watching. Love the L100 ❤️
This is great info!
Thanks for the comment and for Checking it out!
Pipe organs are able to simulate many instruments, especially wind instruments; stringed instruments were more difficult but also attempted. Theatre organs added percussion, and much more, including brand new pipe sounds, vibrato, and more Long before the invention of the Hammond / tonewheel organ. 😎
Very true! Thanks 🙏
Look up Novachord which essentially is a polyphonic synthesizer by Hammond from late 30’s. It’s right down the alley of this post
I am familiar with them. We have two here in town at the National Music Centre!! Very cool!!
Nice sound, but it does not "actually sound like a piano", still is clearly an organ.
It was easy to deduce that he was approximating something; we know there is no hidden piano-sample button.
No shit Sherlock it's an organ
If you go back and listen he says electric piano. Here he's doing a Fender Rhodes piano like Riders..
🎹❤️🤩
🎹🎹❤️❤️
Another great tip. Thanks.
You bet!! 🤟🤟🎹🎹
So a drawbar means sustain and no drawbar means much less sustain?
You can definitely look at it that way :)
Thanks dude
Thanks for watching 🙏
Thank you for mentioning the not paying notes but just hits on what seems to be whatever above the root or third. Cause i was squinting trying to see what notes you were actually hitting..😂
Haha. Yes it’s much more of a percussive hit than any kind of chord. Thanks for checking it out!
Back before synths I was always so frustrated trying to use those sexy gentle setting and fight for volume against the drums and guitars.
I bet!!
